2025 has been an amazing year for the Roots of Resilience project!

We’ve been on a remarkable journey in two Northern landscapes and met an inspiring circle of people! We’re excited to share an initial trailer and website for our film in production.

Roots of Resilience was accepted for nonprofit fiscal sponsorship in January 2025 by Women Make Movies in NYC, and our growing team has been on a sprint ever since. 

We dove immediately into pre-production and planned production trips to Southeast Alaska and Scotland. By September, our film teams on both continents had captured close to 20TB (lots!) of footage. 

Our 2025 production journey encompassed stunning days amid icebergs in glacial fjords, stark warnings in old growth clearcuts, magical moments with elders on both continents, and deep reflection about the many ways forests sustain culture, as well as our climate.

While much of Scotland’s ancient forest is gone, we documented ambitious rewilding projects, new forests taking root, and met communities rebuilding their relationship to the land. Scotland’s stories are infused with hope and determination.

The Alaska film crew witnessed the first totem pole raising in Wrangell in close to forty years. Southeast Alaska is home to the world’s largest intact temperate rainforest, now facing urgent threats: The Roadless Rule in US national forests, vital to protecting old growth, was rescinded by the Trump administration in 2025.

Our production supports the many people working to protect the forests of Southeast Alaska and restore landscapes in Scotland, which are both globally important temperate rainforest regions.
